Four measures to prevent the gear skipping phenomenon of excavators

Jul 31, 2025

(1) It is essential to follow the operating procedures and driving guidelines. When shifting gears, be cautious to avoid "tearing the teeth", thereby reducing the wear of the gear pair.

(2) The maintenance system must be strictly implemented. Regular maintenance and upkeep of the gear shifting device should be carried out. If it is found that the linkage of the gear shifting device is improperly connected, it should be adjusted in time to ensure that the gear shifting device is always in good condition.

(3) The maintenance and upkeep of the self-locking mechanism are equally important. Once it is found that the positioning balls, springs or shift fork shaft have reduced their positioning effect or lost their positioning function, they should be repaired or replaced immediately to ensure that the self-locking performance of the self-locking mechanism remains good.

(4) When assembling the transmission, it is necessary to strictly follow the operating procedures to ensure that all components of the transmission are adjusted properly and tightened appropriately. Especially when driving on downhill roads, the driver should strictly follow the downhill operation guidelines and must not operate illegally.

3) Emergency response guide

If the excavator experiences a "gear skipping" phenomenon during operation, corresponding measures should be taken promptly. Specifically:

(1) On flat roads encountering "gear skipping", the regular shutdown procedure can be followed, and the fault should be carefully inspected and repaired.

(2) On uphill roads experiencing "gear skipping", the gear position should be adjusted to low speed or I gear. After reaching the top of the slope, the machine should be stopped for maintenance; if the gear reduction fails or "gear skipping" occurs again, the operation should be carried out according to the slope shutdown requirements, and the fault should be eliminated.

(3) On downhill roads experiencing "gear skipping", the gear position should be adjusted to high speed or the "grab gear" method should be adopted. After reaching the bottom of the slope, the machine should be stopped for maintenance; if the gear addition or grab gear method fails, the driver should control the engine speed within the medium range, and use "point braking" to make the machine slide to the bottom, then eliminate the fault. It is particularly important to note that if the gear addition or grab gear method fails and the machine is in a downhill state on a large slope, it should immediately follow the slope shutdown requirements and eliminate the fault.

Regular maintenance and upkeep of excavators is crucial. It not only reduces machine failures, prolongs service life, but also shortens downtime and improves work efficiency, thereby reducing operating costs. In fact, about 70% of failures are caused by poor management. As long as we properly manage fuel, lubricating oil, water and air, we can effectively reduce the occurrence of these failures.Excavator
